Wipe out! Another festival falls after just one year

The Kangaroo Island Surf and Music Festival has been scrapped after just one year suffering an estimated half a million dollar cost blowout, according to The Advertiser. Obviously Matt Moran, Sophie Falkiner and Shannon Noll just didn’t send out enough tweets about the festival

The inaugural five event in November last year saw about 4000 people head to Kangaroo Island to watch the surf carnival and sets from Eskimo Joe, The Beautiful Girls, Ash Grunwald, The Holidays, Hungry Kids Of Hungary, Van She, Big Scary, Mat McHugh, Poetikool Justice, and The Salvadors.

In February, the State Government reportedly provided $300,000 in sponsorship to Surfing SA which managed the event, and later chipped in an extra $400,000 to ensure that local businesses involved in staging the festival were paid.

Surfing SA has now confirmed that the event, which was the first time South Australia had hosted an ASP World Tour surfing competition, will not be held again this year. However South Australian Tourism Minister Gail Gago has issued a statement to The Advertiser claiming that “A review into the viability of a similar event in the future has been undertaken which the Government will be considering”.
