Watch Rebecca Black cover 10-and-a-half words of Lorde’s ‘Royals’
Lorde may have become the youngest singer to reach the peak of the Billboard 100 chart since 16-year-old Tiffany reached the top with ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ back in 1987, but she’s not the only teenage star to create a stir in recent years. Remember Rebecca Black?
Black was just 13 years, 8 months and 21 days old when she unleashed the genius of ‘Friday’ upon an unsuspecting internet back in 2011. (Yes, Black is one of the few things on earth younger than Lorde.) The song never reached the top of the charts – it stalled at #58 – but it has clocked up an impressive 58 million views on YouTube. She also has well over one million Twitter followers, who were treated to a brief cover of Lorde’s smash hit ‘Royals’ over the weekend.
Black inexplicably used Twitter’s Vine app to record the cover. It allows users to record six-second video loops using their mobile phone – but someone obviously forgot to tell the accidentally viral singer. “OK, so I don’t really know how this works,” she announced before belting out a 10-and-a-half word cover of ‘Royals’.

And in case you don’t remember who Rebecca Black is…
In other ‘Royals’ cover news, Lorde has revealed that it’s “trippy” that English singer-songwriter Conor Maynard has released his take on the hit, given the “tequila/tequila/tequila” chorus to his track ‘Vegas Girl’ helped inspire her hit. Neo-soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne has also offered up his take on ‘Royals’ via Vevo’s “Unexpected Covers” series. “We chose the song because it’s rare that someone so young writes a song so great,” Hawthorne explained before launching into his “funked up” version.
