Watch: Lorde cover James Blake’s ‘Retrograde’ for triple j
Lorde has performed a haunting cover of James Blake’s ‘Retrograde’ for triple j’s “Like A Version” this morning.
Currently in Australia on the Laneway tour Lorde – aka Ella Yelich O’Connor – joined Breakfast hosts Matt Okine and Alex Dyson in the triple j studios to play her own song ‘Ribs’ followed by a reworking of Blake’s 2013 single. While The Replacements’ ‘Swingin Party’ has been a staple in Lorde’s live set over the last 12 months she only debuted her version of ‘Retrograde’ at the Auckland leg of the Laneway Festival last week. Watch the Like A Version cover below.
In an interview with Matt and Alex before the performance, the multiple Grammy winner said she’d plan to draw on her experiences as a global pop star for new material. “What I’m going through is so abnormal and I feel like a lot of people at my level don’t write about it, because a lot of what we do is boring”, she said. ”[But] it’s interesting to me to write about the weird little details of what we do.”
‘Retrograde’ came in at #10 in our list of the 50 best songs of 2013. ”’Retrograde’ is the first song in recent memory that not only describes the terror of falling in love, but actually evokes that feeling in musical form,” wrote FL’s Edward Sharp-Paul.
Laneway continues in Adelaide today, before winding up in Perth tomorrow.
