Watch Hands Like Houses cover No Doubt’s 1990s classic ‘Don’t Speak’ for Like A Version

Canberra band Hands Like Houses chose to tackle ‘Don’t Speak’ by No Doubt for this week’s Like A Version. Talking to hosts Matt & Alex afterwards, frontman Trenton Woodley talked about the challenge of this seemingly simple song. “There’s so many tiny variations,” he said, describing himself thinking “OK, which lyric is next? Because they’re all very similar.” They also played their own tune, ‘New Romantics’.

‘Don’t Speak’ was written about Gwen Stefani’s relationship with her No Doubt bandmate Tony Kanal, who continued playing bass with them after ending a seven-year relationship with Stefani. Several other songs on their breakthrough album Tragic Kingdom were also inspired by the break-up.
