Watch: Green Day’s most “punk” moment since ‘Dookie’
“Oh, fuck this shit. I’m gonna play a fucking new song.”
This is Billie Joe Armstrong responding to Green Day’s set being cut short at the iHeartRadio Music Festival last night in Las Vegas.
The band was performing ‘Basket Case’ from 1994’s Dookie when a one-minute warning flashed up on a teleprompter. Organisers were reportedly running 25 minutes behind schedule so they decided to slash Green Day’s set to make way for a 45-minute performance by Usher. Annoyed that he couldn’t unveil any new songs from forthcoming album Uno, Armstrong took out his frustrations on Justin Bieber (who wasn’t even at the festival) and a hapless guitar.
Here’s the transcript of his rant in full:
Oh, fuck this shit. I’m going to play a fucking new song. Fuck this shit. Give me a fucking break. One minute left. One minute fucking left. You’re going to give me one fucking minute? Look at that fucking sign right there – one minute. Let me fucking tell you something, let me tell you something, I’ve been around since fucking 198-fucking-8. And you’re going to give me one fucking minute? You’ve got to be fucking kidding me! You’re fucking kidding me. What the fuck! I’m not fucking Justin Bieber, you motherfuckers. You’ve got to be fucking joking. This is a fucking joke. I got one minute – one minute left. Oh, now I got nothing left. Let me show you what one fucking minute fucking means. One minute. God fucking love you all. We’ll be back.
Armstrong recently revealed that Green Day is planning an Australian visit in “February or March” next year, with some smaller, more intimate shows on the cards.
