Watch Disturbed bring their ‘Sound Of Silence’ cover to ‘The X Factor’ Australia

Metal veterans Disturbed have broken through into the mainstream consciousness with their rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Sound Of Silence’. Some people, including Paul Simon like it! Some people don’t! The cover was introduced to a whole new audience last night when the band, who are currently in the country to kick off a headline tour, took to music talent quest program The X Factor for a live telly performance.

Of course, the appearance sparked some debate about “selling out”, with those in support of the appearance contending that it would provide a gateway for potential metal fans to discover actually metal songs. Which is good! In a video posted yesterday, singer David Draiman stated that he hoped the performance would “Represent for rock a little bit, in a pop world. The following Facebook comment from the band was later added:

LOL, TO THOSE OF YOU SAYING…”SELL OUTS”, OR “WHAT IS DISTURBED DOING ON X FACTOR ANYWAY?”

WE’RE FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT FOR OUR GENRE TO BE RESPECTABLY REPRESENTED. ALL ROCK BANDS SHOULD. ALL ARTISTS/MUSICIANS WANT TO SPREAD THEIR WORK TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE. THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT. SHARING THE BEAUTY OF WHAT YOU CREATED. IF THAT IS CONSIDERED “SELLING OUT” TO SOME PEOPLE, THEN SO BE IT.

Last night the track shot up to number two on the Australian iTunes chart.

Watch the performance, complete with over the top intro, below. The performance received a standing ovation from judges Guy Sebastian, Scary Spice, Adam Lambert, and Mullumbimby rapper Iggy Azalea.
