Big things were expected at the 31st Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on the weekend, with N.W.A, Deep Purple, Steve Miller, Chicago and Cheap Trick welcomed into the hallowed canon. But the night kicked off with a surprise tribute to 1996 Hall of Fame inductee David Bowie.

After pulling out of a scheduled Bowie tribute in NYC due to logistical disagreements, The Roots didn’t let their rehearsals go to waste as they backed Talking Heads legend David Byrne and New Zealand pop maverick Kimbra through a rendition of ‘Fame’. Questlove nails the iconic beat, while Byrne and Kimbra spar perfectly on vocal call and response.
