Van Halen headline Stone Music Festival

Van Halen and Billy Joel will be headlining a new music festival at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on Saturday April 20 and Sunday April 21 this year. The inaugural Stone Music Festival will also feature the Kings of Chaos (a supergroup including members of Guns N’ Roses/Velvet Revolver, Def Leppard, Deep Purple, Billy Idol’s backing band and Skid Row), Richie Ramone, Buckcherry, Lifehouse, Illumination Road, and more overseas and Australian acts still to be announced.

This festival will be Van Halen’s first trip to Australia in 25 years. Earlier this month the band’s lead singer David Lee Roth expressed disappointment with Van Halen’s lack of touring outside the US in an interview with Rolling Stone: “How long have I been back with the gang? Maybe six years, we’ll say and we have yet to travel to Europe, South America, Japan, anywhere outside of those basic 50 cities in the United States. And again that’s been a disappointment.”

The festival will be the only Australian performances for Van Halen, Billy Joel and Kings of Chaos.

The Stone Music Festival is named after the 1974 cult Australian movie Stone, in which an undercover cop infiltrates a biker gang called the Gravediggers, made up of Vietnam veterans. It was featured in the documentaries Not Quite Hollywood and Stone Forever. An off-shoot of the festival will be a motorbike ride called the Stone Run, recreating the funeral scene from the movie.
