Tool Australian tour announced

Tool have announced an Australian tour with four arena shows scheduled in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane this year.

This visit will be the first time that the prog-rock legends have been in Australia since headlining the Big Day Out and two sideshows in 2011. Reporting from their Melbourne gig at the Sidney Myer Bowl FL said, “It’s moments of whirlwind experimentation that separate Tool from the chasing pack, as they produce something quite intensely breathtaking to draw the crowd out of melody induced catatonia: a tremendous display of powerful, progressive, melodic and brutal art-rock poetry.”

FL spoke with Tool’s Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor last week to find out what the band have in store for fans on this tour. Jones – who is responsible for all the onstage visuals – said that while nothing was locked in just yet, he has some grand plans to make these arena shows something special. “It’s a process of talking our people [about a] budget and deciding how can we really push that budget and make it mind-boggling and dark and entertaining for people and, again, give them their money’s worth and have fun, so you just evolve with the ideas.”

He explained that the most important step before deciding on the visuals is choosing what songs the band will play: “The first step is picking the setlist and then going out there and setting up video screens and lasers and lights and smoke and seeing how you can make it apply and advance what you’re doing on stage.”

As for the setlist, both Jones and Chancellor remained tight-lipped about what fans can expect to hear come May, however they did teasingly divulge that the band is still “still in negotiations” about whether they will play songs, from their hotly rumoured new album.
