The future for Against Me!: “imagine me in heels fucking screaming into someone’s face”

Earlier this week Against Me! leadsinger Tom Gabel made the shock announcement that he has been dealing with gender dysphoria for years and will soon begin taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.

The announcement was made in a teaser for the news issue of Rolling Stone, which hits newsstands in the US tomorrow. Ahead of the publication, MTV has released a few additional details from the interview revealing that Gabel, who will be known as Laura Jane Grace, speaks candidly about keeping the secret hidden; early memories of fantasizing about being Madonna; and praying to God, asking, “Dear God, when I wake up, I want a female body.”

Rolling Stone’s reporter Josh Eells also spoke with Gabel’s wife, Heather, who has decided that she will stand by her husband. “I kept waiting to get mad. Like, ‘Tomorrow, I’ll be really upset,’ ” she explains. “I’m like ‘Let’s just see what happens, and we’ll just roll with it.’ My friends have been like, ‘What about you?’ But I’m fine. I just want him to be who he is, and for us to get on with phase two. You know, just … change.”

The interview also reveals that Gabel only recently revealed his transgender status to his parents and to his Against Me! bandmates. Talking about the awkward band meeting he called to make the announcement Gabel says that “I felt like I drop-kicked them in the face. We had the most awkward hug ever, and then they left. And the second I shut the door, I was like, ‘What the fuck did I just do?’ ”

Despite this, Gabel says that that band will continue: “However fierce our band was in the past, imagine me, six-foot-two, in heels, fucking screaming into someone’s face.”
