The Big Four at Soundwave 2013?
Updated – 10 August
Soundwave boss AJ Maddah claims that “this is not a big 4 gig” but the addition of Slayer alongside Metallica and Anthrax brings the festival even closer to presenting The Big Four – could we see another big announcement soon?
With both Metallica and Anthrax included on the massive Soundwave 2013 lineup there’s speculation that the festival could be bringing the Big Four to Australia for the first time by adding Megadeth and Slayer on the second announcement.
The festival’s boss AJ Maddah has declared “There is no precedent for this kind of line-up!” and that the impressive lineup is a one off for Soundwave’s ten year anniversary and Maddah says that “Next year will return to normal.” There’s not much room left for really huge acts with Metallica, Linkin Park, Blink-182, A Perfect Circle and Tomahawk will all playing on the festival’s mainstages but what better way to celebrate a decade of Soundwave than with The Big Four?
The festival still has “many more” bands to added to the lineup with the second announcement. Maddah has boasted “We’re not even done yet… 2nd announcement is a damn good festival by itself imho!” and revealing that the additions will include “some great metal… 2 more big metal bands. Couple of smaller ones too.” Two more big metal bands, huh?
“not likely tbh”. He had also claimed that Metallica were as likely to play Soundwave as Hendrix and Joplin, so perhaps he’s just playing games again.
According to Herald Sun’s chief tour prognosticator Nui Te Koha (aka Nuistradamus), who managed to accurately guess that Linkin Park, Blink-812 and The Offspring would be on the lineup, “Soundwave promoters are understood to have made a pitch to the so-called Big Four – Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. But scheduling was a hurdle.” At this stage neither Slayer or Megadeth have announced any tour dates for 2013.
Megadeth released their thirteenth album TH1RT3EN last year, but haven’t toured Australia since the No Sleep Til… tour in 2010. Slayer are working on the follow-up to 2009’s World Painted Blood with guitarist Kerry King telling MTV in June that they’re “gonna finish the record September-October”. They played on the Soundwave tour in 2011 although they were forced to cancel their Sydney set just moments before the were due onsatge.
@canberracrusada this is not a big 4 gig.
