Tegan and Sara GTM sideshows confirmed

Canadian sister-core duo Tegan and Sara have announced four sideshows in addition to their appearance at the recently announced Groovin’ The Moo.

The tour kicks off at Brisbane’s Tivoli Theatre on April 30, continuing on to Melbourne (Palais Theatre on May 2), Adelaide (Thebarton Theatre on May 7) and Perth (Metro City on May 9). The pair will also perform at the Sydney Opera House. Details soon. UPDATE: The Opera House show will take place on April 25.

Tegan and Sara haven’t toured Australia since 2010, although they did tour twice that year – first with Groovin the Moo in May and then returning later in the year to support Jack Johnson. FL’s review of the twins’ sideshow in Melbourne r reported that “with their no-bullshit attitude, excellent array of songs and infectious Canadian accents, Tegan and Sara managed to win over their fans even more (as well as rope in a few new ones) with their brilliant and humble performance”.

The indie-pop duo will be touring their seventh record Heartthrob, which is due for release in Australia on February 8. The follow-up to 2009’s Sainthood, it features new single ‘Closer’, which the pair recently performed on The Late Show With David Letterman. They’ve worked with several producers on the album including Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Kylie Minogue), Mike Elizondo (Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple, Mastodon) and Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Paramore, M83).

In a recent interview, Tegan said the pair wanted the record to be “more commercial, more mainstream”. She explained that they have made an album inspired by pop music “in the very ‘80s sense with hooks and keyboards and lots of big vocals”.
