Summer Aussie tour wrap: Garbage, Best Coast, Alabama Shakes and Tom Petty
May tis’ the month for vague tour confirmations, with Garbage, Best Coast, Alabama Shakes and Tom Petty all recently ‘letting slip’ they will be on our shores this summer.
Garbage release their first album in over seven years, Not Your Kind of People, today and to mark the occasion the 90s rockers have conveniently revealed that an Australian tour is in the works. Speaking with Melbourne’s MX leading lady Shirley Manson confirmed, “We have nothing but love and adoration for our Australian fans…We have a wonderful relationship with [Frontier Touring head honcho] Michael Gudinski – he is like a father to us. Our Career started in Australia, and conversations are already happening. So fuck yeah, we’re coming.”
have just released their debut album Boys And Girls to such rapturous critical praise that we couldn’t help but place bets on them being here for Harvest Festival in November. However, in an interview with News.com today the rock and soul four-piece have said they’ll probably be here in January, possibly for Big Day Out: “We’re thinking January, [the Big Day Out] is the only Australian festival I know. Don’t start any rumours though.” Let the rumours begin!
frontwoman Bethany Consentino has told Tone Deaf that the group has tentative plans for another tour later this year, “I think we’re planning on coming down there, its not for sure… but I think we’re planning on coming down there hopefully at the end of this year and if not at the beginning of next year.” Consentino added that “We definitely want to get back down there again cause we absolutely love Australia, it’s one of our favourite places to come, so we will definitely be back sometime soon to tour this record.”
Cherry Bar owner and Triple M ‘rock reporter’ James Young is fast becoming the new Nui (yeah we did), this morning ‘confirming’ that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are headed to Australia for the first time in 20 years. Nui Mark II told the Hot Breakfasters hosts: “My understanding is they have been locked in and will be coming to Australia”
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are currently touring America and have just confirmed a European jaunt in the second half of this year. However, according to a tweet posted by Petty in late 2011, fans in Australia shouldn’t be getting their hopes up.

Speaking of unfounded rumours, FasterLouder’s understanding is that the Harvest lineup is locked in and will be coming to Australia (possibly with some of the following bands) later this year.
