Splendour In The Grass moves back to Byron; announces 2012 dates

Splendour In The Grass has officially confirmed that the event will return to its spiritual home in Byron Bay this year!

Australia’s biggest camping festival will move back to its original beachside location at Belongil Fields for three huge nights of musical action from Friday 27th July – Sunday 29th July, for the first time since temporarily relocating to Woodfordia in Queensland in 2010.

While many fans will no doubt be buoyed by the festival’s return to Belongil promoters are still working on getting approval for the Yelgun site which they purchased in 2006. It has been over six years since the festival’s organisers bought the additional land in North Byron Parkland, where they hope to establish the festival permanently.

Festival promoter Jess Ducrou has said: “”Despite great efforts to have the festival at North Byron Parklands this year, we are yet to have a determination on the application. In the meantime and after much consideration we are excited at the prospect of returning to the birth place of Splendour.”

Since purchasing the Yelgun site Splendour has faced serious opposition from the local council who want to enforce a LEP (Local Environmental Plan) amendment which would limit major music events, that have 6000 patrons and take place over two days.

Despite this opposition, an NSW Planning & Infrastructure report released late last year recommended approval for three major events a year at Yelgun with maximum crowds of 30,000, 25,000 and 15,000 for the three events over a maximum of 10 days in the first year and “approval be given down the track for events for up to 50,000 people if all key performance indicators are met.”

The NSW Public Assessment Commission has held its public hearing about the matter last week at the Byron Bay Community Centre, where 131 speakers presented their cases for and against the development.

When FL spoke to Jess before Splendour last year she told us that “Yelgun has a little more flexibility in its layout to custom build the site to our festival which is appealing. We also have the opportunity to custom build the site for our festival rather Woodford which is built for the Woodford Folk Festival. I just think it will make for the ultimate experience… we’ll be smaller for our first year, smaller than Woodford, because we want to get it right and it’s important for people coming to the show that it’s a smooth experience. And it’s important for the community that it doesn’t feel overwhelming to them either. It really is a year by year thing, we’ll make sure we get it right and everyone’s happy. There’s more space so it’ll be a more relaxed feeling than the last few years where it’s been a little more crowded.”

And as far as the lineup goes, despite early Radiohead and Stone Roses rumours the festival has officially ruled both bands out of the equation but have said we can expect some names in a few months.
