Soundwave’s AJ Maddah confirms 2014 Perth venue change

Soundwave Perth is shifting from Claremont Showgrounds to Arena Joondalup – and promoter AJ Maddah couldn’t be more excited.

“We’re going to Joondalup! So happy,” the Soundwave boss and Big Day Out co-promoter told fans on Twitter last night. “Finally will be able to hear the band and not have thugs shut down stages!”

He’s referring, of course, to his long-running battle with the Western Australian government and the local council over sound levels, curfews and closure times. While Metallica were allowed to play their full set at Perth Soundwave last year, the festival was forced to cut the sound early on all the other stages. The decision affected performances by The Offspring, The Amity Affliction, Pierce the Veil and other side-stage acts. “They don’t want us there and have made it very clear by thuggish behaviour, threats to suppliers,” tweeted Maddah in response to a fan.

Soundwave will now take place at Arena Joondalup – about 25 kilometres north of Perth – on March 3. It was the site of this month’s Big Day Out, which faced similar opposition from the government and local council and decided to up sticks from Claremont Showgrounds to Joondalup just a few weeks out from the event.

But the shift to Joondalup hasn’t exactly altered Maddah’s pessimism about the future of Soundwave in Perth. “That will depend on attendance and how much grief we get from State Gov,” he tweeted. “At least we now have a friendly council!” As previously reported, the Big Day Out will not be taking place in Perth in 2015.

Soundwave kicks off at RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane on February 22. Acts performing include Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold, Alice In Chains, Placebo and Korn.
