Soundwave 2013 second announcement and Sidewave details

Updated – 16 August

The second lineup announcement has been brought forward to tomorrow – 17th August.

Maddah says that the announcement “be in the afternoon at a quite leisurely time I imagine.”

The Soundwave 2013 lineup has been announced with Metallica, Linkin Park, Blink-182, A Perfect Circle, The Offspring, Paramore, Garbage headlining a massive list of bands making their way to Australia for the festival.

Second lineup announcement

The second announcement will come between the pre-sale and general release of tickets – so sometime between the 17th and 23rd of August. The announcement is tentatively scheduled for Monday 20th August.

The festival’s boss AJ Maddah says that the final lineup “will cost approx $36M net of GST” and has declared that “There is no precedent for this kind of line-up!” and that “”I would be amazed if Bris/Syd/Melb do not sell out instantly… Honestly [I think Sydney will sell out in] under an hour.””: The impressive lineup is a one off for Soundwave’s ten year anniversary and Maddah says that “Next year will return to normal.”

The festival still has “many more” bands to added to the lineup with Maddah boasting “We’re not even done yet… 2nd announcement is a damn good festival by itself imho!” and revealing that the additions will include “some great metal… 2 more big metal bands. Couple of smaller ones too.” The second announcement will feature approximately 22 acts.

Maddah has revealed that with the festival expected to sell quickly that the second lineup could be released earlier than expected having 2nd thought and thinking of releasing it earlier… Like much earlier!”

Billy Talent has been confirmed for the second lineup announcement. Gallows seem to have inadvertently leaked their place on the second announcement replying to a fan who asked why the band wasn’t on the first lineup with the question: “There’s more than one Soundwave announcement isn’t there?”. When a fan forwarded the comment from the British punks onto Maddah he all but confirmed the leak by replying “d’oh!”. Welshmen The Blackout are also close to certainties for the second announcement as they’ve been ‘confirmed’ several times on Twitter by Maddah.

Sydney metal crew Northlane will play on “a couple of the dates”.

It also appears that Maynard James Keenan will be bringing two bands to Soundwave – A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. A tweet from Puscifer, which also has includes the Twitter accounts of Puscifer band members Carina Round, Mat Mitchell, Matt McJunkins, has announced “Soundwave Confirmed. More news to follow”. Puscifer have since announced that “The is confirming APC NOT Puscifer for Soundwave” but then why were Carina Round and Mat Mitchell included in the post? While there’s a faint hope of seeing Puscifer, Maddah has again ruled out any hopes of seeing Maynard James Keenan’s ‘other’ band Tool on the lineup. Maddah’s comments on Puscifer aren’t exactly clear.

The Chariot and Blood on the Dancefloor had confirmed themselves for the festival but were noticeably absent from the first round announcement.

Other bands that could feature on the second lineup include The Vandals (“Will try and get for 2nd announce!”), Northlane, Killswitch Engage, and Deftones. Maddah was hoping Falling in Reverse could play – “if they get their paperwork together” – but the band’s leader Ronnie Radke has been arrested again and is extremely unlikely to be allowed to tour.

And just in case that isn’t enough speculation for you Maddah has also indicated that he’ll try to book Dirty Rotten Imbeciles for Soundwave 2014.

Bands ruled out for the second announcement

Maddah had already ruled out a long list of bands for the festival prior to the first announcement. Since the first announcement he has added several acts to that list including:

No Doubt

The Descendants

Three Days Grace

Avenged Sevenfold

Tenacious D

Protest the Hero

New Empire

Mod Sun

Man Overboard

Bowling For Soup

All American Rejects

Jimmy Eat World

Bleeding Through

Although the presence of Metallica and Anthrax on the lineup has led to speculation that Slayer and Megadeth could join the lineup to complete the Big Four Maddah has declared that “this is not a big 4 gig.”

Tonight Alive have played their “1st and last SW because [according to Maddah] their “manager” ran all over the festival trying become the new promoter for a bunch of my acts. Equivalent of inviting someone to dinner and he shits on the carpet, steals the cutlery and rapes your turtle.”

Stages and timetabling

Maddah has confirmed that Metallica, Linkin Park, Blink-182, A Perfect Circle and Tomahawk will all play on the festival’s mainstages.

There’s no danger of a set clash between All Time Low, Blink-182 and Paramore.

Metallica will play for over two hours. A Perfect Circle have been given a 70 minute slot.. All Time Low will play for 45-60 minutes.. The Offspring will get 70 minutes.

All Time Low and Paramore will clash with Metallica.

Linkin Park won’t clash with Paramore or All Time Low.

Sleeping With Sirens and Pierce The Veil won’t clash with All Time Low, Paramore or The Wonder Years.

Maddah says that the festival “usually starts planning sidewaves early October” so it’s a little early to start thinking about Sidewave shows Maddah has already (unsurprisingly) ruled out the possibility of any sideshows in Perth or Adelaide. He has also announced that there’ll be “some legendary sideshows” and confirmed that Blink-182 will be playing at least one Sidewave show, most likely in Sydney. However there won’t be any sideshows for Metallica, A Perfect Circle or Paramore. Fans of Laurence Arms and Lucero can look forward to a Sidewave with two bands from the second announcement on the bill.

Blink-182 and Linkin Park won’t be playing a joint sideshow.

Stone Sour will most likely play a Sidewave in Melbourne.

“Motion City Soundtrack will “definitely play Sidewaves.

Other Soundwave tour announcements

In addition to the second Soundwave announcement, “Soundwave Touring also has tour announcements from two of AJ’s “all time fave artists to announce soon. The two tours will be announced in the week beginning Monday 13th August

Rival promoter Ken West, from Big Day Out, recently told FL that “I think [Refused] are coming in three months; it’s still in the bidding process. Probably AJ [Maddah, Soundwave promoter] will get that, he ends up getting all that stuff.” When asked if one of the upcoming tours from “all time fave artists” could be from Refused Maddah replied with a promising smiley face and has also told a fans that Refused will play in Adelaide and Perth on the tour. The visit from the reformed Swedish punks will come before the end of the year..

Mayday Parade will also be here for a tour prior to Soundwave festival as will Zebrahead

Maddah also says that At The Drive In will return for a full tour.
