Robert Plant promises Aus return in 2014; will he bring Led Zep?

Robert Plant has promised Australian audiences he’ll be back here next year, prompting some not-so fanciful speculation he’ll return with none other than Led Zeppelin.

During a 90-minute performance at Sydney Entertainment Centre last week, Plant twice reiterated his desire to come back to Australia in 2014. And while he made no claims it’ll be with Led Zep – they haven’t played since the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert in December 2007 – FL reviewer Chris Familton couldn’t help but speculate, especially after Plant and his band played nine reworked Led Zeppelin covers in a 14-song set.

“At two points in the show Plant made reference to seeing us again next year and ‘soon’ with a cheeky grin,” he wrote. “Could there be a tour on the cards for the mighty Led Zeppelin themselves next year? Nothing spoken, nothing confirmed, but the embrace of their back catalogue and the warmth and respect Plant showed for the songs suggests the time might be right for a another trip back in time with the old firm.” Full review here.

Rumours about a Led Zeppelin reunion in 2014 were stoked by Plant himself in an interview with 60 Minutes Australia in February. Speaking to reporter Tara Brown, Plant said he was open to a reunion, cheekily blaming his bandmates – Capricorns Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones – for the band’s inactivity. “I’m not the bad guy,” he told 60 Minutes. “You need to see the Capricorns – I’ve got nothing to do in 2014.”

Robert Plant and his backing band, The Sensational Space Shifters, will wind up their tour for Bluesfest with sideshows in Melbourne (Rod Laver on April 3) and Launceston (Silverdome on April 5).
