Remember this painfully awkward Silverchair Recovery interview?
Daniel Johns has kept fairly quiet since Silverchair went into “indefinite hibernation” back in 2011 spending his days hanging out with his girlfriend, playing dress ups and thinking about buying a pig. To celebrate the release of his debut solo album Talk he has given a series of revealing interviews – including an in-depth chat with FL. But none of the current interviews can possibly match the probing intensity of the grilling Johns and his bandmates got from Dylan Lewis on Recovery back in 1997.
Promoting their Freak Show album, Silverchair appeared on Recovery in during the Easter school holidays as the house band on the show the day before heading down to Torquay to play on the lineup of the Offshore festival alongside Tool, Blink 182 and The Mark of Cain. After dismissing several questions about what it’s like to be in a massive rock band while you’re still in high-school, Johns just started taking the piss telling stories about jamming with their maths teacher in class, writing ‘Stairway to Heaven’ with Mr Page and doing “cool stuff with our mates”.
The vintage interview is a reminder that even back in 1997 Johns was trying to distance himself from the legacy of Silverchair’s debut album. He repeatedly cites “hardcore fusion jazz” as a key-influence and even predicts that Silverchair would “probably not” still be together in 10 years’ time.
