Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith has finally challenged Will Ferrell to a drum battle

It’s the battle that had to happen. Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith has finally challenged his doppelganger Will Ferrell to a showdown.

Smith has been provoked into action by Ferrell’s recent Reddit AMA session during which the actor – and cowbell enthusiast – claimed that he has actually been a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers since 1988. “It has been acknowledged many times that myself and Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, share a resemblance to each other,” Ferrell wrote. “A lot of people think that it’s me playing for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But that would be an insult to Chad Smith. The truth of the matter is there is no Will Ferrell. Only Chad Smith.”

Incensed by the suggestion, Smith has posted a video to Funny or Die’s Instagram account challenging the actor to a drum-off. Smith has previously sought to distance himself from Ferrell by performing with Sammy Hagar’s supergroup Chickenfoot on The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien while “sporting a tee shirt with the slogan “I am not Will Ferrell””:

While Ferrell has not yet accepted the challenge he showed off his drumming prowess in the classic “More cowbell” tribute to Blue Oyster Cult, and as proved in Step Brothers, he could beat Smith simply by putting his nut-sack on the drum kit.
