Radiohead: “Secondary ticketing is wrong on so many levels”

Radiohead have partnered with Ticket Trust, a business established last year by the U.K. Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) and U.K.-based merch/e-commerce company Sandbag, to offer “a secure ethical alternative to the thriving secondary ticket market”.

According to the Radiohead fan site at ease, Ticket Trust offers fans the chance to buy and sell tickets at face value, plus a handling fee which is capped at 10%.

A statement from Radiohead’s managers, Chris Hufford and Bryce Edge at Courtyard Management explains that: “Radiohead are fortunate enough to have a loyal and passionate fan base cultivated over many years. Their live shows are well anticipated and rightly create a tangible sense of excitement through innovative staging. In recent years however, the band’s enjoyment of their own shows has been marred by the knowledge that a great many of their fans have been obliged to pay well over face value for their tickets,” the statement continues. “Secondary ticketing is wrong on so many levels and as management, with ultimate responsibility for the welfare of the band, we must ensure that their fans are treated fairly. This is why we are happy to work with The Ticket Trust.”

This option is only available to Radiohead fans in the UK, but the promoter for the band’s upcoming (and very sold out) Australian tour – Chugg Entertainment – is trying to combat scalping as well. .

In a statement posted on the Chugg Facebook page they have assured fans that they are “very disappointed in the resale of tickets via eBay. We are doing what we can to police this, but unfortunately for all of the deterrents that we are able to put in place (like the additional terms and conditions of sale) it is difficult for promoters, ticketing agencies and venues to enforce. We will not cancel a ticket unless we can determine with absolute certainty which exact seats or general admission tickets breach the conditions of sale, as we would otherwise risk cancelling tickets purchased by true fans like the majority of you. As you can see when you go on to eBay, professional scalpers list tickets with vague details on seating locations but rarely ever get specific about seat or ticket numbers, as this information would allow us to track who they are and cancel their tickets.”

“Since yesterday afternoon, the ticketing agencies have found a small number of credit cards that had transacted more than one order of 4 tickets, and subsequently have cancelled a handful of tickets. We again urge you NOT to buy tickets from scalpers or off of eBay as there is a chance that one of these cancelled orders is the tickets you just paid for.”

Chugg has also endorsed a Facebook group set up for fans wanting to buy, swap or sell tickets at face value.
