Parquet Courts’ backstage rider is very specific, and also amazing

Grimes has an eco-friendly backstage rider that requests the presence of at least one cute bulldog, pug or Pomeranian. Diplo asked for a gorilla, a dart board, a violin player, the third season of Lost on VHS and a framed picture of himself for a New York show. All Parquet Courts want is some bread, dip, corn chips and “your old man’s favourite domestic beer” – and they want it in a particular order. Is that too much to ask?

Provided exclusively to FL, here’s what the Brooklyn-based band requested on their recent Australian tour, which included national dates on the Laneway Festival tour and sideshows in Melbourne and Sydney. As you can see it’s a clever take on the typical “stage plot”, substituting instruments with food items, and requesting the simple things like a “local rock music enthusiast to entertain the performers with … jokes, humorous anecdotes, local gossip and recommendations on where to play next time” and “communion grade red wine”. There’s probably a ‘Stoned and Starving’ joke to be made here, but I’ll refrain.

Parquet Courts were among the first round of acts announced today for Japan’s Fuji Rock festival, along with Kanye West, Jack Johnson, Franz Ferdinand, Basement Jaxx, Manic Street Preachers, Bombay Bicycle Club and SBTRKT. The announcement puts them firmly in the running for a spot on the bill for July’s Splendour In The Grass.

We described their most recent release, the Tally All The Things That You Broke EP, as “the sound of a band playing in the ruins, knowing that their rebellion is futile, and knowing that there is poetry in that”. Click here for the full review.
