Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ tops the Hottest 100 of the past 20 years

Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ has won triple j’s Hottest 100 of the past 20 years.

The song was announced the winner tonight by Breakfast hosts Tom Ballard and Alex Dyson, following a two-day countdown that began with Beastie Boys’ ‘Intergalactic’ yesterday. It beat out The White Stripes’ ‘Seven Nation Army’ (which lost out to Jet’s ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ in 2003) and ‘Last Goodbye’ by Jeff Buckley, which was the bookies’ favourite in the weeks leading up to the count. Lifted from Oasis’ second album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, ‘Wonderwall’ topped the Hottest 100 in 1995. It came in at a paltry #12 in the Hottest 100 of All Time count in 2009. “Get in there,” said Liam Gallagher after hearing the result. “You’ve got good taste.”

More than 940,000 votes were cast in the mid-year poll, with 200,000 of those place on the last day of voting alone, making it the biggest single-day of voting in Hottest 100 history. See full list of winners below.

Here’s some other interesting facts:

– There were 14 #1s including ‘Wonderwall’, Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, Augie March’s ‘One Crowded Hour’, ‘My Happiness’ and ‘These Days’ by Powderfinger, but not ‘Pretty Fly For A White Guy’ by Offspring. – There were 49 songs from the 1990s (1993-1999). – There were 51 songs from the 2000s (2000-2012). – Multiple entries included Daft Punk, Silverchair and The Killers (three songs each); Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Gotye, Jebediah, Jeff Buckley, MGMT, Powderfinger, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead (two songs each). – Two Powderfinger songs in the top 10 including ‘These Days’ and ‘My Happiness’. Both were from 2000’s Odyssey Number Five. – Twenty-nine Australian acts represented including three in the top 10. Hilltop Hoods’ ‘The Nosebleed Section’ was the highest place Aussie at #4. – 30 songs from debut albums including Foster The People’s ‘Pumped Up Kicks’, Arctic Monkeys’ ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’ and MGMT’s ‘Kids’, and ‘Berlin Chair’ by You Am I. – 1997 was the year with the most popular songs. – Only six songs with lead female vocals: Lana Del Rey’s ‘Video Games’, Florence + the Machine’s ‘Dog Days Are Over’, The Cranberries ‘Zombie’, ‘Paper Planes’ by M.I.A, ‘Little Talks’ by Of Monsters And Men and ‘Teardrop’ by Massive Attack (featuring Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins).
