News in brief: Gareth Liddiard solo, “Three Songs No Flash”

Gareth Liddiard goes solo

The Drones frontman Gareth Liddiard is slipping back into solo mode to do a four-gig Sunday residency in May at The Workers Club in Melbourne. It’s been nearly four years since the release of his debut solo album Strange Tourist . Tickets are on sale now here and there’s a swell list of supports that includes Teeth & Tongue in solo mode and Lower Plenty. The host for each week is Jimmy Tait guitarist Sunny Leunig (son of recent Golden Plains keynote speaker Michael Leunig), offering “magic and philosophy.” Each gig kicks off at 7:30pm.

Three Songs No Flash photo exhibition

The live-music photography exhibition 3 Songs No Flash returns to Ding Dong Lounge in Melbourne for the second year, opening tonight (March 25) at 7:30pm. This year’s incarnation spans local photographers (and some FL favourites) Yana Amur, Scott Boelsen, Jesse Booher, Perri Cassie, Katie Dutton, Carl Dziunka, Rebecca Houlden, Ian Laidlaw, Lou Lou Nutt, Naomi Rahim, John Raptis, Brett Schewitz, Richard Sharman, Anthony Smith and Heidi Takla, with their subjects ranging from Kylie and Lorde to Pond and Queens of the Stone Age. Finger food will be provided for tonight’s opening, entry for which is a gold coin donation. More info here. The exhibition is slated to run until April 4, although last year’s was extended due to popular demand.

Parkway Drive get behind anti-bullying campaign

Parkway Drive and Boy & Bear have donated signed items including CDs, posters, T-shirt, and vinyl copies of the latest albums to the latest campaign by anti-bullying group Angel’s Goal. To enter the competition you’ll need to write lyrics with an anti-bullying message and the motto ‘Bullying – no rockin’ way’, record it and send it to Angels Goal at [email protected] The best songs will be posted on their Facebook page. A guitar track to accompaly the lyrics can be downloaded from the Angel’s Goal website listen below.

The competition closes on June 30.
