Nas to headline Movement festival: “The hip hop event of 2013”
“The hip hop event of 2013 is coming”
That’s how co-promoters Niche Productions and Live Nation are billing the debut of their new hip-hop festival, Movement. The festival which will touchdown in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth in April will feature international and local acts including Bliss N Eso, 2 Chainz, Chiddy Bang, Joey Badass and a headline set from Nas. The festival aims to fill “the void of credible hip-hop events in Australia”. Nas has curated Movement’s inaugural event and will also be involved in an artistic and programming capacity for the 2014 and 2015 events.
The half man/half amazing Nas toured Australia with Damian Marley on the final Good Vibes festival tour in 2011 following the release of their Distant Relatives record, but his sets on the Movement festival tour will be his first solo performances here since way back in 2009. Last year he released his eleventh album Life Is Good, which features the tracks ‘Accident Murderers’, ‘The Don’ and a collaboration with Amy Winehouse, ‘Cherry Wine’. Other guests on Life Is Good include Rick Ross, Swizz Beats and Miguel.
Reviewing Nas’ 2009 show in Melbourne FL reported that “with a career spanning almost two decades, you can forgive Nas for making comprises. By sacrificing verses from many of his classics, he was able to fit in well over 20 songs for the evening. His ability to incorporate a backing band into the live setting also brought a new sense of dynamism and urgency to many of those songs; translating them into something more modern.”
The tour marks a return to the festival scene for Niche following the sad demise of their Days Like This! festival which ran in early 2009 and 2010 with lineups that features the likes of Public Enemy, Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, Roots Manuva, Method Man & Redman, Mayer Hawthorne and Cat Power. The boutique festival for hip hop and electronic music lovers was axed in late 2010 with the promoters promising that they would “look at a new date option for the festival’s return”
