Melbourne Music Week announces flagship venue, opening night acts
The full program for Melbourne Music Week won’t be announced until Wednesday, October 7 but the flagship venue for the 2015 event has been unveiled, and it’s the Former Royal Women’s Hospital. The disused basement and adjoining rooms of the 150-year-old building on Swanson Street will house this year’s series of installations and performances. What was once the home of medical breakthroughs like the first-ever IVF quadruplets will now provide a home for one-off performances that “redefine the way punters experience live music” as designed by Swell. It will also be Melbourne Music Week’s first carbon-neutral flagship venue, with all carbon emissions measured and offset at the end of the festival.
The opening night on Friday November 13 will feature Gypsy & The Cat, The Harpoons, and Dorsal Fins. As well as the Former Royal Women’s Hospital events over the eight days will be spread over venues in the CBD and at iconic locations around Melbourne.
Last year 250 local and international artists played 110 events over a very stuffed calendar of gigs including a Live Music Safari and highlight shows by Remi and Little Ugly Girls.
