Listen: New Pond ‘Giant Tortoise’

Not to be outdone by Tame Impala, Perth’s Pond have put out a new single that matches their sister band in the epic stakes.

Trading “Cretaceous-era space-rock” verses with spazzed-out instrumental passages, ‘Giant Tortoise’ is the first track unveiled from “impending” album Hobo Rocket, which will be out through Modular later this year. It’s the follow-up to Beard, Wives, Denim, which came in at #17 in our inaugural Readers Poll of the best albums of 2012, and was described by FL as “a record that bundles together disparate influences in an accomplished melange while somehow possessing an inextricable and almost tangible geographical link to Australian landscapes and settings, particularly those of the west”.

Pond put in a fine showing at the Melbourne leg of the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival yesterday, playing material from Beard, Wives, Denim, including ‘Moth Wings’, ‘Fantastic Explosions Of Time’ and ‘You Broke My Cool’, and unveiling ‘Giant Tortoise’ to a receptive crowd. The band was ably led by hyperactive frontman Nick Allbrook, who flailed about like a perfect cross between Johnny Rotten, Thom Yorke and Benjamin Button.

Pond will unveil new material at the Adelaide and Perth legs of the Laneway festival this weekend.
