Listen: New Architecture In Helsinki ‘In The Future’
Architecture In Helsinki’s first new material since 2011 is another candy-coloured gem. ‘In the Future’ picks up from the thriving dance-pop ecosystem of their fourth album Moment Bends, stoking ‘80s radio euphoria with neon hooks and canned party flourishes.
The three-minute single comes ahead of the Melbourne indie pop veterans’ slot at Splendour in the Grass, along with a pair of warm-up gigs just announced: one in Ballarat and the other at their hometown’s intimate Toff in Town. Dates below.
Continuing with the last record’s self-described “modernist pop”, ‘In the Future’ hinges on the softly raspy lead vocals of Cameron Bird and follows in the shape-shifting yet disciplined tradition of ‘Contact High’. It’s available from iTunes and their Bandcamp now.
The band have worked once again with producer Francois Tetaz, best know for his work on Gotye’s Making Mirrors_, as well as Kimbra’s Vows and Sally Seltmann’s Heart That’s Pounding. In a two-part interview with FL last year, Tetaz spoke of the band’s need to make a “statement” with Moment Bends. “They wanted to make quite a coherent record,” he said. “A ‘new sound’ record. So to do that means a different approach to how they’d make their earlier records.”
Architecture In Helsinki are performing on day one of Splendour (July 26), alongside Mumford & Sons, TV On The Radio, Klaxons, Babyshambles and Matt Corby.
