Legion festival has announced the dates for its 2016 debut

Rising from the ashes of Soundwave, the Legion festival will hit the east coast of Australia over the Easter long-weekend next year with Perth and Adelaide set to be treated to “mini-fest” versions of the lineup.

The Legion festival is being cobbled together by John Sankey, the drummer with Soundwave 2016 act Devil You Know, and will be crowd funded by fans via Pozible. “Easter long weekend is what we have settled on. It’s such a great time of year – not too hot, not too wet, not too religious,” he explains. “Plus it’s easy to remember!”

The festival will hit Melbourne on Saturday, March 26 then head to Sydney the following day and wrap up with a show in Brisbane on Monday, March 28. Some of the festival’s acts will then travel to Adelaide and Perth for a smaller “mini-fest”.

The three east coast dates will be limited to a capacity of just 10,000 but the festival is aiming to become a fixture on the Australian calendar and not just a one off replacement for the cancelled Soundwave 2016 tour.

“Major factors like lining up for toilets, bars and food and too many bands playing at the same time piss us off as much as it does you,” Sankey explains in an open letter to fans. “Limiting numbers on acts, stages, and capacities to reasonable levels can create a more enjoyable experience for everyone.” Read Sankey’s letter here or watch his update video below.

The Pozible campaign to fund the festival will be launched on Monday, January 4.
