Led Zeppelin At Lismore Art Space

From a –  “One Night Stand’ with Led Zeppelin in 2005, to a shantytown in Brazil in 2007, to the Lismore Art Space in 2009: Ted Harvey’s work is a testament to his perserverance and clarity of vision.

As a professional photographer in 1972, Ted photographed Led Zeppelin’s three hour gig in Sydney. Apart from some copies that were given to Led Zeppelin at the time, the photographs remained unseen until 2005 when the Lismore Regional Gallery hosted a two day show of them titled –  “One Night Stand’. Encouraged by a global interest in the photographs and inspired by Band Aid, Ted set up Rock Photo Aid to sell limited edition prints with all proceeds going to help children living in extreme poverty in Brazil. The photographs have since travelled to Sydney and Melbourne, with plans to show them in America and the UK.

In 2007, Ted travelled to Brazil to meet some of the children and witness first-hand the harsh conditions in which they are living. Nervous about taking a professional camera into an area where crime is commonplace, Ted took a small automatic camera to record his experience. It was these photographs along with the Led Zeppelin photographs, an artwork by Reg Mombassa, traditional Warli paintings from India and paintings by resident artist, Narmada Smith, which hung in the Lismore Art Space when it was officially opened over the weekend of September 18 to 20.

Ted, also a builder by trade, has converted an old factory building into spaces for artists to work from as well as hold workshops and other events. The space has been compared to a New York loft, retaining some of its historical aesthetic in the simple re-fit. This was the perfect setting to view the rarely seen images of Led Zeppelin. The large prints, (measuring 40×59 inches), viewed in the intimacy of the Lismore Art Space, captured all the exuberance of the day they were shot and resonated with the joy that is the reason why we – as artists, writers, creatives and musicians – do what we do.
