Justin Townes Earle – Nothing’s Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now

Seems like only a moment ago that Justin Townes Earle delivered Harlem River Blues which gave us a slightly different side of the singer, with a much more smooth and polished delivery. Just 18 months on he has returned with his latest record Nothing Is Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me.

Baby’s Got A Bad Idea is a two minute rave that starts up with the electric guitar of Calexico’s Paul Niehaus and takes off from there and could be from the song book of his father, Steve Earle. This album was produced by Nashville producer Sklyar Wilson, who also produced the previous release and contributes piano or organ where required. Won’t Be The Last Time is wrapped around the lonesome sound of Niehaus’s pedal steel and the fiddle of Amanda Shires while Justin sings a song about love possibly lost. It’s a classic country song.

The South and New York are never far away from Justin’s lyrics and Down On The Lower East Side is a late night blues song with some excellent organ and saxophone throughout. Memphis In The Rain is very familiar territory for Justin and for his listeners. They may be familiar but they are bright and new. Movin’ On is a truly a standout track and the autobiographical nature of the lyrics is charming and moving.

Recorded in four days without an overdub in sight this record is the finest article Justin has released. With ten songs that could (and probably will) be covered by any number of country singers, he is at the top of his game. Justin is not one to rest on his laurels and his prolific nature seems to be taking him down a road that is paved with less stones and a lot more gold.
