Guess which anthem just became the most streamed song in Spotify history?
If you’ve been smashing that mf play button on Drake’s ‘One Dance’ for the past six months, then give yourself a pat on the back, because the chart-conquering hit has just become the most streamed song in Spotify’s history.
The Toronto rapper takes the gong from Major Lazer’s ‘Lean On’, which nabbed the spot last year from English songwriter Ed Sheeran. ‘One Dance’ has racked up 880 million streams, beating out ‘Lean On’ which is currently sitting at 875 million streams. Part of its streaming success might be due to Drake choosing not to release an official video, pushing some users from YouTube to Spotify instead.
Drake’s also the #1 Artist on the streaming site, with 36 million monthly listeners, and over 8 billion total streams.
Spotify also recently named ‘One Dance’ as the 2016’s Song Of Summer, where it beat out big contenders in Calvin Harris’ ‘This Is What You Came For’, and Sia’s ‘Cheap Thrills’. His latest album VIEWS also holds the record for the most streams in its release week – 254 million compared to the previous title holder, Justin Bieber’s Purpose with 77 million.
There’s some contention around that title though, with critics pointing out the somewhat glaring inconsistencies with the number of users and the number of streams.
For now though, Drake remains on top of the world.
