Gotye the tenth most hyped act of 2012, so far

You may think that Gotye hype has been avoidable this year, but according to a list released by The Hype Machine and BBC6 compiled from the posts on “863 key music blogs from across the world” the Belgian born Aussie is only the tenth most hyped artist of the year.

With his chart topping success, Glee endorsement, and ubiquitous presence on every singing competition on earth Gotye has made his way into the top ten but despite all that exposure he was simply no match for the blogosphere’s insatiable need to gush about Grimes, Lana Del Rey and Miike Snow.

BBC6’s Tom Robinson says that “The graft, enthusiasm and musical expertise of the world’s music bloggers has led to a new world of possibilities for gifted independent artists. It’s largely thanks to bloggers that artists no longer need business cash, industry contacts, or even an outrageous amount of luck to get their music heard. These days, all they need to be is good. The rise and rise of Grimes has been breathtaking. She’s one of those artists whose work is perfectly attuned to the moment – effortlessly capturing the imagination of a global audience. But much more to the point she’s also very, very good indeed.”

Several acts on the list are due to hit our shores soon with Lana Del Rey, Miike Snow, Father John Misty, Azealia Banks, and The Shins heading to Byron Bay for Splendour and Harvest hosting both Santigold and Chromatics. And a few made it onto FL’s mid-year wrap-up of the best albums of 2012 so far.
