FL’s October Playlist

This month’s FL Playlist features sass from Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackets; the sunny psychedellia of Gosteleradio, Missing Children’s folk pop and the soul-soaked blues rock of The Rubens.

Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackets

Whether you have caught them seducing crowds at Red Bennies in Melbourne or been lost in a moment of glitter and beehives at one of their festival performances in the last year, there is no way you would forget seeing Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackets

In voice leading lady Clairy ‘Baby’ Browne invokes the soul of Etta James, while on stage she oozes the sass and charisma of Amy Winhouse; a deadly combination that is made all the more potent with the harmonizing BVs of her three Bangin’ Rackets and five-piece dance hall band.

As our FasterLouder reviewer put it after catching the band supporting The Cat Empire in Brisbane: “I feel secure in proclaiming that Clairy Brown and The Bangin’ Rackettes is like nothing you’ve ever seen in the flesh. Think Amy Winehouse without the visible track marks meets The Pointer Sisters meets The Supremes. Think the house band at Tony Montoya’s favorite cigar bar during the sixties. Think sexy, saucy and completely groovable Motown rock ‘n’ roll.”

CB/BR make swampy, soul tunes, and songs such as the pulsating Lean Lanky Daddy, swagger along with a big band abandon that makes your heart quiver and your toes tap. It’s fun, it’s clever and it’s just as delicious on record as it is in real life.

Clairy Brown and The Bangin’ Rackets released their debut, self-titled EP last year and this month will follow that up with their first full-length release Baby Caught the Bus. The band are launching the record with shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney in November. Check our their Facebook for more tunes and full tour dates.
