Festival MC Aaron Gocs gives us a full rundown of the first ever Thrashville

Taking place in the hallowed surrounds of Dashville, the first ever Thrashville was a resounding success – featuring a lineup of shit-hot Australian punk and metal headlined by legends Cosmic Psychos.

A ripper lineup requires a ripper MC, and Thrashville brought in none other than comedian Aaron Gocs, fresh from his star turn as Ocean Girl. Fresh from the festival, Gocsy gives us a full run-through of his day, in his own inimitable style:

arriving at the dashville property after about a 40 minute drive out of newcastle i wasn’t sure what i was in for. being a city boy i have no survival skills at all. but it didn’t take long to find out how welcoming everybody was. i was shown my tent, grabbed a burger and a drink then headed to the stage for my hosting duties.

due to some unfortunate muck-ups I missed the first few bands but I finally kicked things off with mucho sonar. these guys have a horn section so I joked that we might hear some mighty mighty bosstones, but in reality they were much more chunky rock riffs than offbeat ska.

next up were mischling who turned the heavy up a notch more. it was interesting to watch the singer do his stuff just minutes after I had seen him get his mohawk freshly shaved backstage.

the australian beef week show then proceeded to do what they do best – expletive-laden, pub punk rock. as soon as the singer walked on stage with a freshly corked bottle of bubbly we knew we were in for a treat.

Gocsy managed to give the festival’s half-pipe a hoon:

jen buxton and the slaughterhouse five were up next and I must admit I am biased as this is music that is right up my alley. it was a great set that fit beautifully in the surroundings.

for those ’80s kids like me who have only been able to read about the psych-glam rock of the era we were in for a treat with the neptune power federation. made up of a who’s who of oz punk royalty they certainly don’t do things in halves – epic solos and stage props including a giant mushroom that I was able to obtain the next morning when I found out they were being thrown out. score.

clowns then brought the punk party that always do. after entering stage to the sounds of the oils’ beds are burning, the recently expanded 5-piece including new bassist hanny proceeded to rock out in their daisy duke denim shorts.

legendary punks hard-ons then ripped through a blistering set of 2 chord, 2 minute rippers.
final band of the night cosmic psychos blew everybody away with their well-honed set of pub thrash-rock on-stage barbie chef cooking up fresh snags for the punters.

all in all thrashville was an epic day for the hunter region heavy music community and hopefully there are many more to come. i enjoyed my hosting duties even if laughter was scarce and i even managed to head into the mosh pit for a bit as well as a couple skates of the ramp, plus a decent amount of bbq and drinks backstage. cheers!
