Elton John just gave Sarah Blasko a shout-out during Carpool Karaoke

Elton John is notorious for his love of emerging artists and new music, even dropping past Sydney’s Repressed Records to pick up some fresh cuts when he was in Australia last year. A longtime supporter of Nick Littlemore’s group PNAU, John gave another Aussie act props overnight dropping Sarah Blasko’s name during an interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

During the show’s now infamous “Carpool Karaoke” segment John named Blasko as one of the artists that inspires him to continue writing music. “When you hear something by someone new,” he told Cordon, “Like … Ed Sheeran, or this girl called Grimes or there’s a girl in Australia called Sarah Blasko … whenever you hear something new that inspires from the young it makes you feel like you want to do that.”

During the rest of the interview John explains why he always buys four copies of every album (he doesn’t own a phone to download tracks) and belts out classics like ‘Your Song’, ‘I’m Still Standing’, ‘Tiny Dancer, and ‘Circle of Life’ (the last one while wearing a lion’s costume). Watch below.

Blasko recently released her fifth album Eternal Return. Recorded at The Grove Studios an hour north of Sydney with producer Burke Reid it was a departure from Blasko’s previous work and saw her experimenting with synths and a more “poppy” aesthetic. Eternal Return was recently nominated for the 2015 Australian Music Prize.
