DIIV pull out of Big Day Out 2014
Brookyn indie group DIIV will no longer be performing at the 2014 Big Day Out.
The band’s name was conspicuously absent from the festival’s posters when the second lineup was announced yesterday, with speculation that their omission was related to guitarist Zachary Cole Smith’s recent arrest on heroin charges. But management have confirmed this is not the case, telling FL the Brooklyn outfit are focusing on the release of the follow-up to 2012’s Oshin: “DIIV has canceled all upcoming tour dates outside the US to focus on recording a new LP. We apologise to our fans in South America and Australia and will be back with new material shortly.”
Cole Smith was found in possession of “a plastic bag containing 42 decks of heroin” and charged with two misdemeanor counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, one count of possession of stolen property and one count of aggravated unlicensed driving. He was also charged for driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without insurance, driving while unlicensed, and having an inadequate exhaust system. His girlfriend, 21-year old synthpop singer Sky Ferreira, “was found in possession of ecstasy and resisted arrest”.
The two were taken to Ulster County jail and then released on bail. Smith then took to Twitter to remind fans that he’s innocent until proven guilty: “What you’re reading is a police blotter, not the outcome of a court case. These cops wanted to fuck us, and they did. Sky did nothing wrong.”
The cancellation comes two days after the Big Day Out announced their second lineup led by Primus, CSS, and The Drones.
