Dave Grohl covers ABBA with a band of nameless ghouls
Does Dave Grohl ever sleep?
The Foo Fighters’ frontman has spent the past year working on a documentary about the Sound City studios, drumming on the new Queens of the Stone Age album, directing a video for Soundgarden, defending Skrillex, reuniting Nirvana, developing a sitcom, preparing for his keynote address at SXSW, and collaborating with every practically everyone. Now we can add “covering ABBA with a band of nameless Swedish ghouls” to Grohl’s ever-expanding CV.
Grohl manned the drums and produced the cover of ABBA’s ‘I’m A Marionette’ for Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid’s compatriots Ghost. The original version of the song was part of a mini-musical called “The Girl with the Golden Hair” that ABBA performed at their live concerts and was the b-side to their classic ‘Take a Chance On Me’. The new version by Ghost and Grohl is certainly heavier, but no less theatrical with lyrics like “I’ve got no-one but myself to blame / Something’s happening I can’t control, lost my hold, it’s insane” taking on a suitably disturbing edge.
The song isn’t included on the tracklist for Ghost’s new album Infestissumam but if we’re lucky perhaps Papa Emeritus II and his band of nameless ghouls might play it for us when they tour with Soundwave festival next month.
