Daniel Johns announces debut album, drops banging new single

Only months after dropping his Aerial Love EP Daniel Johns has announced his debut solo album Talk.

Due out on May 22, the record will feature the previously released ‘Aerial Love’ and new single ‘Cool On Fire’ – one of a handful of tracks co-written by Lorde collaborator Joel Little. The new song is a good indication of what to expect from Talk which, according to a press release, contains “Lollops of lush R’n’B … laced with cruisy electro flavours and some dark glitchy bedroom production touches to create a stylish take on modern soul.” Listen to ‘Cool On Fire’ below.

While his solo work is vastly different to the music he released with Silverchair, Johns admits he has always been a musical chameleon often to the chagrin of his fans. “I’ve always felt like most people hate everything I do but thankfully there’s always been an enthusiastic minority who seem to ‘get’ it,” he says. “That’s fine with me. Anything that appeals to everyone tends to suck anyway.”

“What’s funny is that when Silverchair released Frogstomp most people went out of the way to tell me how much it sucked,” Johns continues. “Then when we made Diorama a few years later everyone started telling me how I should go back to making Frogstomp I guess now I’ll be told to go back and make Diorama again! That was part of why I picked the album title too by the way. I don’t really care what most people think. Let them talk.”

Other collaborators on Talk include Melbourne underground duo Damn Moroda, Louis Schoorl and hip-hop producers Styalz and M-Phazes. The Presets’ Julian Hamilton (who co-wrote Silverchair’s ‘Straight Lines’) has teamed-up with Johns once again on the tracks ‘By Your Side’ and Dissolve’.

Daniel Johns will launch Talk at Vivid Live playing shows at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on May 28 and 29.
