Children Collide “ripped off” by Australian Idol winner?
Children Collide frontman Johnny Mackay has told FL that he’s delighted to have been (allegedly) ripped off by Australian Idol 2008 winner Wes Carr.
The video for Carr’s new single ‘Anthem’ appears to be a mirror image of Children Collide’s ‘Loveless’ clip, which was released in 2011. The Children Collide original, directed by David Michí´d (Animal Kingdom, The Rover), was shot in a single take and features Mackay singing while his shoulder-length hair is shaved off by an anonymous figure. The Wes Carr version is exactly the same – except for the clown paint, handcuffs and decent music that features in the Children Collide version.
But speaking to FL from New York – where he’s been based for the past couple years – Mackay says he’s a fan of the alleged pop plagiarism. “I’m flattered and honoured to be a part of the Australian Idol legacy,” Mackay told FL. “Thanks for reminding us all that it’s emulation, not innovation that drives our industry.” Watch the clips – and a tribute featuring Triple j presenter Lindsay “The Doctor” McDougall – below.

Mackay launched Fascinator, his new psychedelic project, last year with the release of a five-track EP Birth / Earth. Mackay has described his new sound as “trip slop … like a soggy, squirming foetus.”
