Beth Orton announces Heavenly Sounds tour
Just over 12 months since her last visit Beth Orton will return to Australia for a “Heavenly Sounds” tour this May.
The shows will be the first Orton has played here since the release of her sixth studio album Sugaring Season, and will see her performing in churches and cathedrals in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
The singer released Sugar Season – the much anticipated follow-up to 2006’s Comfort Of Strangers – in November last year. Speaking with The Guardian about her hiatus from making music, Orton revealed that there was a time when she genuinely believed that she would never return to her craft: “I think most people in the industry thought I had run my course. And I started to believe that too, I think. I was like ‘Er, OK, goodbye, I’ll be off now, I’ll just be over here if you need me again ever.’ I was sort of relieved to be let go. I knew they weren’t in love with me, so it felt all right.”
FL reported from Orton’s sold out Sydney Festival gig last year: “When the silence is broken by the quaint finger-picking acoustic guitar and that unmistakable warble, the pieces fall into place. It clicks. It all makes sense. It’s not the aesthetics and the movements that matter in the slightest. They never have with an artist like Orton. It’s the music itself – performed in this stripped back nature that presents little more than the skin and bones of songs old and new.”
