Beady Eye on replacing Blur at Big Day Out: “It is ironic”
Beady Eye drummer Chris Sharrock has said that the band found it pretty funny when they were enlisted to replace Oasis’ old Britpop rivals Blur on the Big Day Out lineup.
When asked by FL ’s Michael Hartt whether Liam Gallagher and co had a bit of chuckle when they found out they would be stepping in to fill Blur’s shoes on the 2014 BDO lineup, the drummer admitted it was pretty strange. “It was more like ‘Oh wow. That’s funny.’ The irony of it” he explained. “It’s no big deal though, really. That was all a hundred years ago, wasn’t it? We’re just glad to be out and going somewhere. Especially Australia.”
Beady Eye’s first ever visit to Australia will see them play one sideshow on January 27 at The Enmore in Sydney and perform second-last on the “Blue” stage at the BDO nationally – a festival which Sharrock says the band has always dreamt of playing. “We didn’t think we were doing anything in January, actually” he said. “This [opportunity] came in at the last minute. We’ve always wanted to play Big Day Out. I’ve never played it. I don’t know if the lads have ever played it.”
At their recent festival appearances in the UK Beady Eye have been playing a blend of songs off their two releases – 2011’s Different Gear, Still Speeding and 2013’s Dave Sitek-produced BE – plus a couple of Oasis songs. Sharrock said that Australian fans can expect much of the same this January: ” I’d say it’s 60 per cent new, 30 per cent old stuff and 10 per cent some really old stuff” he revealed. ” And I think we’ll be sticking a couple of [Oasis covers] in [to] keep the punters happy.”
The full interview with Beady Eye will be published on FL later this week.
