BDO sacks contractor for urging girls to “get em out”

Organisers of the Big Day Out have sacked a “rogue” contractor following complaints of inappropriate messages flashed up on the big screen.

The messages were allegedly posted on the Orange Stage screen during Vampire Weekend’s performance at the Gold Coast leg of the event on Sunday. According to punter Sophie Wright they encouraged females to “publicly expose themselves to a few thousand people on the big screen with ‘get em out’”. “What a fantastic display of respect for young women and Vampire Weekend, and a true example to set to your male punters,” Wright posted on Facebook.

In response, Big Day Out have issued a statement saying the messages were posted by an external contractor whose conduct was not endorsed by organisers of the event. “Big Day Out deplores the actions of the rogue contract technician who took over the running of the messaging on the main stage screen,” the statement read. “The individual was employed by an external supplier. The content on this screen was not endorsed by Big Day Out. Big Day Out does not support the sexualisation of any of our audience, whether male or female. The individual has been identified and has been replaced. We expect respectful behaviour at our festivals.”

Meanwhile, angry fans have taken to the Big Day Out’s Facebook page to complain about sound issues during the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ closing set on the Blue Stage at the Gold Coast event. “It sounded like someone had a cd playing in the background,” wrote one irate punter. “If it was due to noise restrictions why not move the entire festival forward an hour … How did Chili Peppers feel about thousands of angry fans chanting ‘turn it up’.”

Organisers have yet to respond.

The Big Day Out continues this Friday (January 25) at the Showgrounds in Adelaide. Acts performing include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Animal Collective, Bands Of Horses and Vampire Weekend.
