The 43 most anticipated albums of 2017

It’s fair to say that 2016 was pretty blessed when it came to phenomenal albums. There were some excellent debuts from the likes of Camp Cope and D.D. Dumbo, some welcome returns from Frank Ocean, A Tribe Called Quest and The Avalanches, and some career-defining records from Beyonce, Solange and Danny Brown.

So 2017 has a hell of a lot to live up to. Luckily, there’s every indication that it will – with big hitters such as Lorde, Arctic Monkeys, and Gorillaz all lined up to release music sometime in 2017.

Here are the albums that we are most looking forward to in 2017. Buckle up.

Lorde

What We Know: Such is the fevered anticipation for the follow up to 2013’s Pure Heroine, that Lorde actually had to ask fans to chill out a bit. Well it looks like 2017 is the year, with the New Zealand artist being locked in to perform at Coachella in April and NYC’s Governors Ball in June, indicating that she’s might just have some some fresh material to share.
When It Will Drop: Autumn-ish?

Gorillaz

What We Know: It’s been years of hint dropping and cryptic posting, but 2017 looks like the ticket for new Gorillaz music.
When It Will Drop: Sooner rather than later, we reckon.

Tool

What We Know: This album has been highly anticipated for the past decade, but perhaps (dear god perhaps) 2017 is the year. The band are headling Gov Ball in June, and over the last couple of months the band have said that 5 songs have basically been finished, and that they’re hard at work to get it done.
When It Will Drop: Hopefully sometime in the next 10,000 days. Or 365 days, preferably.

Arctic Monkeys

What We Know: The band caused a big stir last month when they announced they were heading back to Sheffield to write and record the follow up to 2013’s globe conquering album AM.
When It Will Drop: Don’t expect it in the first half of 2017.

The xx – I See You

the-xx-i-see-you

What We Know: The third album from Jamie Smith, Oliver Sim, and Romy Madley-Croft is due to land at the end of this week, led by lead single On Hold.
When It Will Drop: January 13

Arcade Fire

What We Know: Last June Will Butler flagged that 2017 would be the year that their fifth album would drop, tentatively saying that it would out in the Northern Hemisphere Spring.
When It Will Drop: Autumn

Migos – Culture

7681ea2f2fc8ed4d170a43b5a5eb5527.1000x1000x1

What We Know: The highly influential Atlanta trio are set to step things up with their second commercial studio album, following a string of acclaimed mixtapes.
When It Will Drop: January 27

Courtney Barnett

What We Know: Court has been flat chat since releasing her debut full-length Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit in early 2015, but with her touring commitments winding down, we reckon a second album is well and truly in the oven. Plus we’re hearing whispers of a collaborative EP with a certain long-haired Philadelphian…
When It Will Drop: If it’s 2017, it’ll be later 2017.

Nick Murphy

What We Know: After dropping the Chet Faker moniker late last year, tricky Nicky has released a pair of mighty impressive tracks under his own name. Surely his emergence from a chrysalis will be capped off with a full-length sometime this year?
When It Will Drop: Nick holds his cards close to his chest, fair chance we could get a surprise release quite soon.

At The Drive In

What We Know: The third coming of At The Drive In got off to a shaky start last year with the departure of Jim Ward, but it looks like that hasn’t affected plans for an “upcoming full-length produced by Omar Rodríguez-López and Rick Costey” featuring new song ‘Governed By Contagions’.
When It Will Drop: Soon.

Sampha – Process

What We Know: Sampha exclusively revealed to FL that album track ‘Timmy’s Prayer’ was co-written with Kanye West. Expect more heavenly goodness on Sampha’s debut full-length.
When It Will Drop: February 3

Meg Mac

What We Know: Back in November Mac wrote on her Facebook page that her debut album was finished, and we’d be hearing the first cut of it in the new year. Well, the new year has come – so the countdown has well and truly begun.
When It Will Drop: TBA

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard – Flying Microtonal Banana

mustard1_1024x1024

What We Know: Flying Microtonal Banana will be the first of four albums the psych rock outfit will release this year. They’re kicking off with some heady experimentation: focusing heavily on microtonal tuning (a micro-tone is a music interval smaller than a semi-tone.)
When It Will Drop: February 24

Dune Rats – The Kids Will Know It’s Bullshit

What We Know:  They’ve released a track called ‘Scott Green’. They’ve also released one called ‘Bullshit’. The scene has been set.
When It Will Drop: February 3

Bliss N Eso – Off The Grid

What We Know: Sydney hip-hop titans will release their sixth album in March, the follow up to 2013’s Circus In The Sky.
When It Will Drop: March 10

Ocean Grove – The Rhapsody Tapes

What We Know: UNFD signing Ocean Grove will finally unleash their debut album upon the world, following the release of some fiery singles. Dance aficionados should tune in as well: this is producer Running Touch’s heavy project.

Thundamentals – Everyone We Know

What We Know: Everyone We Know was recorded at Hermitude’s studio in the Blue Mountains, and features the Hilltop Hoods, Mataya, and Laneous.
When It Will Drop: February 10

JOY.

What We Know: With the release of singles ‘About Us’ and ‘Falling’, 19 year old Brisbane producer JOY. announced herself as a fiercely talented artist. She’s been steadily drip-feeding singles (and a mixtape) over the last year – and her debut is apparently on the way.
When It Will Drop: TBA

Haim

What We Know: The release date for Haim’s much anticipated second album has been shifting around for the last six months, but now the Haim sisters have tentatively settled on a secure date: sometime in the middle of the year. They’ve again linked up with producer Ariel Reichshaid and ex-Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij for the record.
When It Will Drop: Mid-year

Japandroids – Near To The Wild Heart of Life

Print

What We Know: We won’t have much longer to wait before the Vancouver duo lay their third album bare for all to hear. It’s out at the end of the month.
When It Will Drop: January 27

The Flaming Lips – OCZY MLODY

Screen Shot 2017-01-09 at 4.12.39 PM

What We Know: Bizarre, brilliant, and sometimes even just downright bad. Whatever the descriptor, The Flaming Lips have always been worth a listen. A new album at the start of the year is just what 2017 needs to get rolling.
When It Will Drop: January 13
